Broomhill Swimming Pool

November 15, 2017 6:42 PM

Fusion Leisure have been granted planning permission for the renovation of the Broomhill Swimming Pool following a meeting of the Ipswich BC planning committee today. The art deco lido was a much loved leisure feature in the town but closed to the public over 15 years ago.

Cllrs. Inga Lockington and Oliver Holmes have been monitoring progress on the plans for some time. As a Borough and County Councillor , Inga has for many years supported the Broomhill Pool Trust who have worked tirelessly to bring back outdoor swimming to Ipswich.

When speaking to Inga and Oliver, local residents have almost universally expressed support for the scheme but there have been worries about the impact on local parking. Inga says: "Because of the listed status of the Pool and the library next door, the opportunity to increase on-site parking is very limited. I have asked the Borough if we can use adjacent land in their ownership for extra parking. I will be working hard to make sure any problems are spotted early-on and all possible steps are taken to resolve them."

At the planning meeting, Inga spoke to the Committee as a ward councillor and mentioned some of the concerns of residents including the serving of food and snacks to users of Broomhill Park and the possible nuisance that might cause to residents using their gardens.

Fusion Leisure are now pressing ahead with the final application for lottery funding and if all goes well, work should start towards the end of next year. By 2020, Ipswich swimmers should be able to swim all year round in the heated pool and together with the new gym, it will mean we all have no further excuses for not getting fit.
