A swinging start to the new year

January 13, 2017 9:18 AM

The first principal Council by-elections of the year last night gave us two Liberal Democrat gains. The first one was in the Labour heartland of Sunderland in a ward where we have never even come second before. A truly incredible swing from Labour to Liberal Democrat.

Sandhill (Sunderland) result:
LDEM: 45.0% (+41.5)
LAB: 25.0% (-29.9)
UKIP: 18.7% (-7.2)
CON: 10.0% (-5.7)
GRN: 1.3% (+1.3)

The second was in Hertfordshire and saw the Liberal Democrats take a seat off the Conservatives to gain control of Three Rivers District Council.

Gade Valley (Three Rivers) result:
LDEM: 60.9% (+24.0)
CON: 19.1% (-22.9)
LAB: 11.6% (-9.6)
UKIP: 6.7% (+6.7)
GRN: 1.8% (+1.8)

Our congratulations go to the respective Liberal Democrat local teams.
