The plans to build a new Pool complex complete with an Olympic (50m) sized swimming pool moved step closer recently following a revaluation of the current Crown Pools site.
Plans have been on hold as £13m is required to bridge the gap between what a new pool would cost and the funds that are currently available.
Lib Dem Cllr. Richard Atkins, responsible for economic development at Ipswich Borough Council, said a lot depends on how much demand there is for retail space in the town once the two major developments announce which big-name retailers are on board.
He said: "If it comes about that one of the major anchor tenants has decided to go for the old Civic Centre site or the Mint Quarter, they are not going to go in to the Crown Pools site.
"The dream position is that a new pool could be built at no cost to the taxpayer.
"I don't think that will be the case although we think the shortfall figure of £13million can come down."
Ipswich Borough Council's executive committee will discuss the options tonight with it being recommended that they wait until autumn before making a long-term decision. At that time a decision will be made as to whether Crown Pools should be refurbished or bolder plan, perhaps including the new pool complex should be implemented.
