ID cards at £400 per family - an expensive waste of money

With the news that Labour is bringing an ID Interrogation Centre to Ipswich (under the guise of a Passport Agency building) Ipswich Liberal Democrats reaffirm our opposition to ID cards. We also welcome the vigorous campaign being mounted by NO2ID against ID cards in Ipswich. Like NO2ID Liberal Democrats are opposed to ID cards which will not tackle the issues their Labour proponents suggest.

In short: ID cards will not tackle terrorism

Will not tackle illegal immigration

They will not tackle benefit fraud or identity fraud

What we can tell you is that an ID card will cost £93 per person and rising. Thats nearly £400 for a family of four.

It is clear that despite this the Government is pressing ahead with ID cards and is systematically and secretively putting in place the means of imposing ID cards.

Under the guise of a 'Passport Interview Centre' Ipswich is to get an ID interrogation centre.

The secretive means by which the Government is implementing ID cards exposes one of our key concerns about them - that of creeping executive power over and against the privacy and individuality of ordinary folk. Ipswich Lib Dems are concerned.
