Ming Campbell and Andrew Cann discuss Lib Dem plans for forces accommodation improvements

Liberal Democrat leader Sir Menzies Campbell QC OBE MP visited Colchester Barracks to review the base and set out Liberal Democrat Policy to improve accommodation for our armed forces. Local campaigner Andrew Cann went to meet Ming and also to add his voice to this important campaign.

Last year 15,000 people quit the Armed forces. These brave men and women need to be better treated in a manner their service demands and in order to retain their skills and professionalism in the service.

They deserve decent housing and whilst on Duty the tools to do the job. They have been let down by successive governments. The standard of housing many of them are expected to endure would result, if provided by a council, in a public outcry.

The Liberal Democrats call for:

  • All army accommodation to be assessed at the highest standard according to the Army's Standard or Conditions
  • An Independent Commission for Military Complaints to be set up to ensure complaints against the armed forces are

handled effectively

  • Proper support to be offered to troops returning from service including proper medical care and counselling
  • Development of a Service Families Charter - to ensure that all families in the armed forces receive consistent and standardised welfare services
