Liberal Democrats support our local NHS staff
In an extraordinary attack on Ipswich Hospital staff key members of Ipswich Labour Party claimed this week that all the bad at the Hospital was down to the staff and all the good came from the Government.
Ipswich Liberal Democrats believe that there are lessons to be learned from all with regard to the crisis in the local NHS but for local Labour Councillors (and of course their MP as always) to claim they have no responsibility at all beggars belief. It also doesn't say much for their attitude to staff at the Hospital.
Ipswich Liberal Democrats welcome the extra money going into the NHS but note the following:
1) Labour has continued to push 'market' orientated changes to the NHS. The problem with this is of course that there are winners and losers in markets and the policy doesn't provide for patient care for those unfortunate enough to find themselves near a 'losing' hospital. Unlike buying toothpaste there isn't another brand or choice for the vulnerable. The Governments message is 'If your Hospital fails you lose out'.
2) Labour has underfunded Suffolk NHS by 9%. That means that we get less per patient here than the average for the country. Meanwhile two thirds of money spent in the local NHS is on the over 65's and we have more elderly people than the average for the country. So to use Labour's market speak we have more demand (potential patients) than the average for the country but less supply (cash for treatment). I challenge any hospital administrator to work with that.
Whilst the Govt. can take some credit for extra funding for the NHS it must also accept responsibility for the mess in this part of the world. To do less is misleading.
