Cann: Suffolk County Council must cut reliance 20,000,000 miles of car journeys per year
Cllr. Andrew Cann joined sponsored a motion throwing out 'Green' travel targets which would reduce the mileage of Suffolk County Council employees and Councillors by only 1% a year. This was following the previous target of 2% cut per year being dropped.
Currently £29m per year in direct and indirect costs is attributable to Business mileage incurred at the County Council and this is increasing at a rate of over 2% per year. This is unsustainable, expensive and not green.
Councillors agreed that Suffolk County Council should be setting an example in cutting costs and demonstrating that large organisations can make significant changes that benefit the environment.
The recommendation to place greater emphasis on larger reductions in costs and mileage will be passed to the Tory cabinet for deliberation.
