Sellafield. Over 500,000 tonnes of nuclear waste have been created in the first 50 years of generation in the UK
A leading environmental consultant from Halesworth, Phil Wilkinson, believes that deep burial of radioactive waste is not the best option.
In the past sites such as Thetford or even Orford Ness have been examined for the burial of the toxic waste generated over the first 50 years of the nuclear programme. Over 500,000 tonnes of radioactive waste exists in the UK today. Nuclear Power Stations go on to generate nuclear waste and each life cycle of power plant generates more waste though very expensive decommissioning which takes over 100 years.
Cllr. Andrew Cann said 'Nuclear Power is not sustainable, desirable or affordable. Building a new generation of nuclear power stations is just storing up more problems for future generations to deal with. This inter-generational legacy is wrong. We should pass on to our children a better world - not one which we polluted and couldn't clean up'.
