Chernobyl - One catastrophic reason not to build more nuclear power stations
The Prime Minister has put Nuclear Power back on the agenda with a vengeance. This is despite expressing these views when in opposition;
"What is unbelievably depressing about the Conservative government is that they see in the evidence about greenhouse gases not an opportunity to promote environmental concern, but a chance to make the case for nuclear power". Tony Blair 1988
The Liberal Democrats are the only main political party that opposes nuclear power and our view is supported by evidence. The Sustainable Development Commission - the government's advisers on green issues - challenges Blair's view that nuclear power is the only realistic way for Britain to meet energy demand while cutting carbon dioxide emissions. The Commission published a series of reports showing that increased emphasis on energy efficiency and the wider use of renewable energy sources are a far better way to tackle global warming - see - http://www.sd-commission.org.uk/pages/060306.html
Please read these reports where you will find a number of issues with nuclear power:-
Long-term radioactive waste,
Cost to build,
... and to decommission,
Security and Terrorism
Attack on nuclear facility,
Sustainable alternatives.
There is also growing evidence that the mining and refining of uranium ore is creating significant carbon-dioxide emissions.
Please sign our petition if you agree with the Lib Dems that nuclear power is not the answer to our Climate Change concerns.
