The LibDems overturned an enormous Labour majority of nearly 12,000 to win the Dunfermline & West Fife by-election, winning by a remarkable 1800 votes. After a campaign largely run by Chancellor Gordon Brown, in the constituency where he lives, and next door to the one he represents, this is a stunning blow against both him and Labour - a 16% swing away from Labour to the LibDems.
Richard Atkins, who stood for the LibDems in Ipswich at the 2005 General Election, said "Labour has clearly lost the support of people who had voted for them for generations. And the Tories remain consistent under their latest leader - they keep on losing!"
There was a swing away from the Conservatives of 9% - again in favour of the LibDems. "Just think what these swings do to the political map here in Ipswich!"
Richard observed "there have been many in the media who had written, not for the first time, the obituary of the LibDems. Once again, we have surprised them. Our party keeps on growing. It isn't just our policies, it's the core principles of freedom, fairness, and trust, that appeal to more and more voters."
