The Liberal Democrats are campaigning for a fair deal for women aged 60-64, who Government plans currently omit from the one-off £200 Council Tax refund.
Across the UK, up to 1,545,000 women pensioners will not be able to receive this payment because, according to the Labour Government, they are not old enough. The payments are being restricted to those aged 65 and over. This means that women 60-64, despite having passed the state pension age, will be unable to receive help with their Council Tax bill.
"In the long term we want to see an end to these gimmicks. We need to replace the Council Tax, which places a huge and unfair burden on pensioners, with a fairer system based on ability to pay. And we need a pension system that ensures dignity and security in old age," says Sandra Gidley MP, the Liberal Democrat Older People Spokesperson.
