Labour U-Turn on Council Tax Revaluation

October 14, 2005 12:00 AM
Cllr. Andrew Cann

Cllr. Andrew Cann says "Council Tax is unfair - revaluation is just postponing more pain, Council Tax must be scrapped".

Following a national Liberal Democrat campaign, the Labour Party has decided to postpone Council Tax revaluation until "after the next general election". This is good news for anyone whose home increased in value about the average since 1991. However, this is only a postponement.

"Labour doesn't have the courage to make even small changes to the system of local taxation. Under Labour there's no hope of a decent and fair tax system" commented Cllr Andrew Cann (Lib Dem, St Margaret's & Westgate).

"The Government may have got out of a sticky situation by cancelling revaluation, but this does nothing to help the millions of pensioners and low-paid families who struggle week after week to pay their Council Tax bills.

"Revaluation or no revaluation, Council Tax is Britain's most unfair tax and it has to go.

"Labour's determination to keep this Tory Tax shows that they simply don't care about the low paid, about pensioners, or about social justice."
